[edit] Uploading Images
Before you upload any files, please try searching Wikimedia Commons and Wikibooks. Both already contain so many uploaded files that it is very likely that a suitable image that you can use has already been uploaded. If you find a suitable image on Wikimedia Commons, please do not upload the image to Wikibooks. Duplicates are unnecessary and may be deleted as described later.
To include an image on any module or page, you or someone else must first have uploaded the file to English Wikibooks or to Wikimedia Commons. If the image file uses a free license acceptable to Wikimedia Commons or is public domain, you can upload it to either place. Wikimedia Commons is preferred so that the image is available for more people to use. You may also be able to upload other images to Wikibooks under fair use or fair dealing terms if the images fit within Wikibook's requirements for non-free use. Wikimedia Commons does not allow fair use or fair dealing images to be hosted.
[edit] File types
There are many file types that can be uploaded, the most common are GIF, PNG, JPG, and SVG. The filename should end in ".gif", ".png", ".jpg", or ".svg" respectively. The server automatically renders SVG images into PNG; thus, you can upload SVG images without requiring readers to have SVG support in their browsers.
[edit] Acceptable licenses
Ensure the file license is a free license compatible with the licenses acceptable to Wikimedia Commons or that fair use applies.
- The Creative Commons Attribution licenses, the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licenses, and the Free Art License are examples of acceptable licenses. We also accept public domain images, and also screenshots of free/libre software that are themselves released under free licenses, such as the GNU GPL.
- Any license that prohibits modification or commercial use is not acceptable. For example, Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs is not acceptable. The only exception is if fair use applies.
- The GNU Free Documentation License can result in serious inconveniences when applied to images. If you want to use GFDL for images, we recommend using the GFDL in combination with the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license, in order to give people a choice depending on how they intent to use the images.
- You can find a list of Wikibooks copyright tags at Wikibooks:Image copyright tags. All images must be properly tagged within 7 days of being uploaded, or they will be eligible for deletion.
[edit] Upload to English Wikibooks
- You have to log in to upload files to Wikibooks. Creating an account only takes a few seconds, and is free.
- Please do not upload any images that are available on Wikimedia Commons to Wikibooks. Images from other Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, if Commons licensing policy allows it. Please note that images must be free in the United States and its country of origin to be uploaded to Commons. See the Move an image to Commons section.
- Upload your file.
- Describe your file; give the source of the image (preferably a URL). If you made the image and own the copyright, say so.
- Choose the correct license or fair use option from the menu. This automatically inserts a image copyright tag such as {{cc-by-sa-2.5}}, {{GFDL}}, or {{screenshot}}.
[edit] Upload to Wikimedia Commons
If you are not familiar with Wikimedia Commons already, read their first steps at Commons. Commons does not allow fair use images.
[edit] Move an image to Wikimedia Commons
Any user can upload acceptable images to Wikimedia Commons. To move an image to Wikimedia Commons, upload the image to Wikimedia Commons keeping all required information intact, and than tag the original copy located on Wikibooks, or some other project, with {{nowcommons|filename on Commons}} or {{nowcommons}} if the file was uploaded with the same name. A local administrator will than know to delete the image.
Alternatively you can use CommonsHelper to upload images to Wikimedia Commons. CommonsHelper will ensure that all required information is kept intact. After using CommonsHelper, continue the steps to tag the image with {{nowcommons}}.
[edit] Image deletions
All images must have a valid image copyright tag. Otherwise, any user can add {{subst:nld}} which looks:
The warning includes the current date. Seven days later, an administrator can delete the image, unless someone puts a correct image copyright tag on the image.
Uploading images without license despite being warned may result in temporary block. See Wikibooks:Media for more information.
[edit] Copyright violations
Images found to be a copyright violation should be tagged with {{copyvio|http://source.of/the.image}}. Any user can send a Wikibooks:Boilerplate request for permission to the author of the image to request licensing it under a free license. If the status of the image is not confirmed in 7 days, the image will be deleted.
Users who are notorious copyright violations uploaders might be blocked by administrators.
